V3 & Banshee X Server
The XFree 3.3.5 distribution has Voodoo 3 and Banshee support. Although, the setup section may help you get things right. In the set up, you have to define each resolution that you want to do 3D in, as an X resolution.
- Dependencies:
- TCL is needed by XF86Setup
- Most of the X stuff. Daryll's 3dfx X server is one of many packages that is needed to run X. On installation of your distribution install X and pick VGA16 X server or Generic video. Don't worry about memory, color depth and do not probe.
- The Xserver and Libraries for XFree86-3.3.5:
- Xserver
- XF86Setup
- The Xserver and Libraries for XFree86-3.3.3:
- Xserver
- Libraries
- XF86Setup
- Installing:
- "su" (become root)
- "rpm -Uvh [Filename]" for each file above.
Where Filename is the files from above.
- Setting up X:
- "su" (become root)
- "XF86Setup"
- Choose your card
- Tell it "do not probe"
- There is no need to specify memory amount
- Do not specify clocks.
- Define your monitor. This is important. The X server needs to know the monitor capabilities. You may find your specs here. If at any time your monitor has a high pitch whine, lower your scan rate a little(in /etc/X11/XF86Config). Another indicator that the sync rates are to high, is the monitor going in an out of sync. This can kill a monitor!
- Define the color/resolutions that you want to run. These resolutions are not only for X, but for 3d also. I define everything that the monitor can do. Then edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file to reduce resolutions in different color-depths, if needed. I have had problems getting 1152x9xx to work correctly on my monitor, so I edited it out.
- Hopefully your done.
- "startx -- -bpp 16" or "startx -- -bpp 32"
