This point is made towards the end of the NY Times article:

"The McCain aides said the senator sided with Ms. Iseman’s clients only
when their positions hewed to his principles."

On the face of it, this seems like a rather weak and uninteresting
story. When you get involved in politics, it is impossible to always
avoid the appearance of being unethical, especially when you have other
people hounding you looking for just that kind of thing, or there are
people trying to trap you.

I did not know that McCain was involved in the Savings and Loan scandal.
From the article, I get the strong impression that McCain was
genuinely fooled, that it is something he feels really badly about, and
that he has really tried to make up for it with introducing ethics bills.

Frankly, he comes across in the article as an extremely honest man, who
makes those kinds of mistakes that we all make, except that in his case
it is periodically dug up again for all to see.
