I have had a lot of complaints about the high signal to noise ratio on the list, and the large volume of posts that are not in the spirit of the list. To help alleviate this problem a new list, called EMAIL:PROTECTED has been created. Any post that is inappropriate for the members list should be sent there (this includes irrelevant replys to an appropriate post to the members list).
"What posts are inappropriate for the members list?" You ask? Well, the MLUG FAQ says:
Any question pertaining to a free Unix or Unix-like operating system is fair game as long as the answer does not appear on this FAQ or you have not made an honest attempt to find the answer yourself.
Posts pertaining to job opportunities are good.
Posts pertaining to hardware, but not pertaining to a free Unix OS, are generally welcomed, but are questionable.
Posts pertaining to the Mac OS, or any Microsoft OS are generally considered to be off-topic, but may be of enough interest that a posting might be appropriate.
Posts pertaining to Star Wars may be appropriate if they are not excessive. :)
My hope is that by doing this we will create a more successful members list that more people will be involved in. However, at the same time we will provide a forum for offtopic, general discussion to take place.
I implore you to carefully select which list to send your message to. I'll be appointing a group of MLUG members to become moderators. These moderators will do their job very liberally. Basically, they only exist to make sure that flame wars, spam, and horrendously offtopic messages are sent to the discussion list and *not* the members list. If at any time you have any complants regarding the speed of moderation or the rejection of a post please let me know immediatly.
The new discussion list has been populated with everyone from the members list. If you would like to be removed from this unmoderated discussion list simply send a message to EMAIL:PROTECTED with no subject and the words "unsubscribe discussion" in the body.
If you are currently not subscribed to the members list, but feel that these changes will alleviate any concerns that you've had in the past please rejoin the list by sending a message to EMAIL:PROTECTED with the words "subscribe members" in the body.
Pending any objections the members list will become moderated Tuesday morning. Please send any comments, suggestions or flames to me off list.
Thanks,
Jay Buffington
