Mike,

You should definitely check out PostgreSQL - it's more enterprise  
friendly than MySQL, but just as free. A company called EnterpriseDB  
makes an Oracle-compliant version of Postgres to boot.

MySQL is easier to learn and admin, but for any production work, I'd  
still pick Postgres.
