Is that what you call it? ;-)
I've been on MLUG since 8 Oct 1999, so I guess the answer is "yes." See
the old welcome message below. Looking back at a few messages I saved, I
can see that Jon King, Shannon Spurling, Rick Buford, Stephen
Montgomery-Smith, Michael "Mogmios," Adam Procter, Bryan Venable and Ryan
Woodsmall were all on the list within the first month that I was on, which
probably means they were there before me. I found out about MLUG through
posters I saw around campus. I just realized that the archives go back to
September 1998 and reveal more about who was around at the beginning and
what they were writing:

The discussion list seems to have started in October 2000 and the
announcement list archives go back to March 2000. The first message on
the original MLUG list was sent on 28 September 1998.
So what do we know about the inception of MLUG -- when was it founded and
by whom? Do we want to have a 10th anniversary celebration of any kind
this fall?
Maybe someone will want to write a few lines about early history for the
FAQ before all is forgotten:

I can see that a a few founding members have been here from the very
beginning.

WELCOME TO MLUG
***************
This letter is to welcome you to the Mizzou Linux Users Group (MLUG) and
to notify you that you are now added to our mailing list. Here are a few
things that I would like you to know about MLUG:
1. Please feel free to use the MLUG mailing list to ask ANY questions
that you have concerning Linux and related issues. NO question is too
basic or too complicated to post to the mailing list. The members of MLUG
vary a great deal in background and experience, so almost any question
will apply to multiple people on the list. Please help to keep the
mailing list healthy and functional by not only asking questions, but also
by posting answers to other people's questions if you can. Send mail to
the mailing list at EMAIL:PROTECTED
2. Besides the mailing list, the MLUG website is the main source for
keeping abreast of what is going on in our organization. Go to
http://mlug.missouri.edu to check up on meeting times, coming events,
member information, etc.
3. All MLUG services are provided for by the mlug server at
mlug.missouri.edu (128.206.158.42) This server is where the website and
mailing list are maintained. All MLUG members are granted a free account
on the MLUG server. To get your account, please email me at
EMAIL:PROTECTED and let me know. I will then contact you by
phone or email to personally set up your account. Feel free to
use it for constructive means, such as email, file storage, web sites,
etc. Just don't abuse it.
4. The MLUG meets almost every week to discuss general business and to
learn more about linux. The meetings start with a "Question and Answer
Session" where people can get answers to questions about linux for about
an hour. This Q&A session is then followed by a presentation on a subject
pertinent to our interests. Please watch the mailing list and website for
the next meeting.
5. Please read the MLUG FAQ at http://mlug.missouri.edu/faq.html to
become familiar with our culture. If you don't read this you will risk
upsetting a lot of people by possibly doing or saying something that is
contrary to the ideals in the FAQ.
Ok, that about covers everything I can think of. Once again, welcome to
MLUG! Also, if you ever have any questions about MLUG, please feel free
to contact me.
