Sure. If I had my preference people would in-line their responses,
bottom post, edit the rest, write in complete sentences, use standard
grammar, and spell check the words. In addition, they would put large
files on a server someplace and reference it within the e-mail instead
of attaching it to the e-mail and sending it to 200 of their
coworkers.
Unfortunately, that's not going to happen any time soon. In this day
and age of Blackberry's, iPhones, and other mobile devices, folks
don't scroll down and then type. They simply hit "Reply" which puts
the cursor at the top and they start typing. And that text often
looks like "cu l8r". No amount of RFCs is going to change that unless
there is away to enforce it (e.g. mail gets bounced like it does for
malformed addresses.)
Fortunately, I use gmail that collapses quoted text, creates
conversations, and has tags, which takes care of most of the issues of
posting. For everything else, I shrug my shoulders or delete.
