The reason it wants you to use its router is so it can run QoS on your
local network. Our whole house phone system runs on Asterisk (PSTN, a
1800 number and 2 UK DID numbers).

Once thing you really don't want is for your call to break up everytime
you send an email with a large email attachment, so something that gives
priority to the voice traffic is really helpful. Since upstream traffic
is almost always the limiting factor, that's where the QoS is most
helpful though it would help in the case of you doing a large download
where the remote server can send as fast as your broadband can receive.
