does Linux have any advantage over that?
BSD sometimes uses GNU tools (like grep), and sometimes its own tools
(like sed). Some tools are significantly different (like make).
I would have to guess that Linux is still easier to deal with when you
want to add a new program because most things these days are going to be
readily available for Linux in some kind of package. But that's just a
guess. What's your experience?
From the packages point of view, FreeBSD does extremely well, and is
perhaps one of its greatest strengths. It has the "ports" system. And
if a port for software you like doesn't exist, you or someone else can
create a port for it, and it will quickly be added to the base.
