It doesn't come with a hand-crank, you have to get one that will
generate the appropriate DC current. Apparently the ones they ship to
kids overseas will have foot pedal generators. The idea was to make
it modular so that all kinds of power sources can be used, and to keep
kids from developing wrist and finger problems from hand cranking
their laptops all the time. See
http://wiki.laptop.org/go/Battery_and_power for more info, including
links to hand and foot powered generators as well as info about solar
panels.
There are three USB ports. When I plugged in my USB flash drive it
was mounted automatically on /media/<non user friendly name>/, but you
can go into the Browser activity and click in the address bar, put in
file:/media/ and browse from there. There's also an SD/SDHC slot so
that's another option.
You can play Ogg audio and video on it
(http://wiki.laptop.org/go/GStreamer). I'll leave it to you to figure
out how to get DVD content into the proper format and see if it will
play from the USB stick :-)
I've played the songs that come with it. The speakers are tinny, but
there is a headphone jack so I'd recommend using that for music or
video.
