I'm thinking of hacking on the OpenMoko. I want to give it motion controls like the Wii controller and some other gaming related features. Built-in GPS and the ability to write my own code is something I've long been looking for in a phone-enabled device. I've been thinking about making an RPG-style multiplayer universe that uses augmented reality for a long time. OpenMoko may be the key to letting me do it finally.
I like doing active things like hiking and I think adding real activity to multiplayer gaming will make the games a lot more fun. Instead of sitting in front of the tv/pc waiting for some stupid respawn and going through meaningless tasks you can actually get out there and explore. Going on a quest might require hiking through your local state park or even rock climbing, swimming, interacting with local vendors and fellow players, etc. To me all that sounds like a lot more fun and I've only been waiting for a portable cell-enabled GPS-enabled computer that I could build from to make it possible. :)
