The cube is really just eye candy. There are more functional plugins that
do what you're talking about where they show all desktops at once. Has
anyone used screenlets yet? They finally got the widget layer hotkey mess
fixed in the ubuntu repos. You can now just press F9 and all of your
wideted screenlets will popup on top of a darkened background. Supposedly
this has been configurable for a long time, but time spent on productivity
much out weighs time spent getting eye candy working :-P.
You still have to do some added configuration on ubuntu to get all of compiz-fusion
enabled. In Gutsy they have two effects settings low and high (don't
remember the exact working off the top of my head). You have to install
the compizfusion-manager to get the custom button added to the effects
settings tab in gnome. Gutsy made all of this appear seamless, pretty
cool.

Yeah, I can barely function without at least two monitors anymore, although
window grouping with CompizFusion helps *a lot*.
The thing I don't get is the cube. I'd rather see all sides laid out in a
matrix on the screen than have some on the backside of the cube. For
example, I could go for a 4x4 layout and skip the cube.
I'm going to have to get Ubuntu on my desktop real soon. It's about time. It
sounds like it's working great now.
