No, that's saying that the open-source version does not have USB or RDP
support. I'm using the closed-source version and have no had trouble
with any of my USB devices (except for my external hard drive, but I
haven't really tried anything special to get it to work). My printer
and flash drives work fine with the closed-source version, so I'm happy
with it.
I hadn't even thought about it, but I guess Microsoft does use all that
Genuine Advantage crap now, which does indeed check the registry and
such. Shame on them.

If that's not a big issue for you, then I'd say go ahead with the GPL
version.
In the "Proprietary version vs. free and open source edition" section
of the Wikipedia entry for VirtualBox, I see this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtualbox#Proprietary_version_vs._free_and_open_source_edition
So that means that USB devices will not work in Windows under
VirtualBox. I thought at first reading that it only meant that the USB
was not available remotely. That probably will be important for me
because we may be doing some things with a USB barcode label printer.
As for the Microshaft comment... That sounds like something they'd
do. Always trying to find a way to con you into buying their
software. I'm sure the Linux community will find a way around it
though. :-)
Maybe -- it's reading the registry information. I read about it here
in the "Microsoft and Wine" section of this Wikipedia article:
