I'm running a 64-bit system with an old Fedora 4 install. Setting up
32-bit applications was ridiculously easy. Set up the 32-bit
repository in yum.conf and yum install firefox.x86. The dependency
resolution pulled in all the 32-bit libraries (X, GTK, etc) and set up
firefox for me.

I would be surprised if a similar solution didn't exist for apt /
Ubuntu. You shouldn't be compiling things yourself; there are
well-tested 32-bit packages of the whole distribution. Have you asked
in their excellent support forums?

Mark
