Just thinking about computers and internet service for poor people:
Apparently, many nations have excellent internet service, often better
(both faster and cheaper) than ours. Unfortunately, the opposite also
happens. My wife's family lives in Ecuador. We can get computers to
them, though it isn't easy. The difficult thing or them to get is
internet access. Phone calls are really pricey, so dialup is possibly a
worse option than broadband. They were paying $50/month for "broadband"
that was probably working at around 100 kilobits per second most of the
time, but was unbearably slow during some times of day. The worst part is
that these people can't afford $50/month.
I don't know if there is any way to improve on that situation. Any kind
of satellite service is going to be pricey too. I guess we'll just have
to wait.
