It depends on the type of card you need- mPCI, PCMCIA, mPCIe, PCI, PCIe,
USB, etc. and also on the type of computer you are using it in. I've had
decent luck with Intel 802.11g hardware- the 2200/2945 mPCI card and the
3945 mPCIe card. They do require a binary firmware blob, but once you
have that loaded, and many distros will do it for you seamlessly- they
work very well. You can get one of these guys from Newegg for about
$30.
If you have a desktop, get a wireless bridge. I have a Buffalo
WLI-TX4-HP 802.11g model for my desktop and it's *so* much easier to
plug an Ethernet cable into it than jerk around with a wireless card. It
has a Web interface and everything, plus it is more powerful than any
PCI/PCIe card. Too bad they are about $30-40 more than a PCI WLAN card.
Hope that helps.
