It was bugging me when I tried to work with Spanish characters like é, ñ,
etc., that different programs were working differently. I couldn't really
make it work in emacs the way I wanted. The bash command line was doing
one thing (due to readline, apparently), ls another, and so on. Then I
found this web page:

All my questions were answered and all my dreams have come true! ;-)
I like the way emacs does deadkeys.
