Well, if your son is using the computer mostly for gaming then he probably is getting worth out of it. Of course that also depends on what games your son plays. Right now it is mostly the FPSs that get the most out of XP 64. There is typically a clear distinction of texture quality between 32 and 64 bit. Of course it also helps to have a game that is made for 64 bit or at least has a 64 bit patch.

Or maybe XP x64 is worse when the program was not written for 64 bit and there is no patch, but better when the program was written for 64 bit and or there is a patch (installed). That would make perfect sense to me and it would reconcile Adam's claim (above) with Shawn's claim (below).

I'll have to ask my son if any of his games are like that. I think they might all be 32-bit games.

even install under that.

This makes me think that my son would have been way better off if we
hadn't listened to the tech guy who sold us the computer. He thought it

would be fine to use XP Pro x64, but that was just not good advice. My
son really wanted his games to be fast and I'll bet he was not getting
what he paid for during this past 1.5 years of use because of XP x64.
That one guy screwed us up in a lot of ways with his bad advice --
delivered very confidently, I might add. It wasn't just about the OS.
