i ran xp64 for a while and performance on applications varied. i had
some games that were "supported" and ran poorly. windows xp itself was
very good. fast, responsive, installed and booted quickly.
also, a lot of software installed in legacy 32bit mode. some wouldn't
even install under that.
problems under ubuntu 64-bit:

In the MS-Windows world, with XP x64, there is a 32-bit subsystem called
WOW64 (Windows-on-Windows 64-bit) that allows users to run programs
written for ordinary 32-bit Windows.
Is there nothing comparable in the Linux world?
The WOW64 approach doesn't always work though. A few programs fail to
install. I've also had a bunch of problems with drivers that did not work
on x64 (e.g., printer, sandisk reader).
