I see it helping out the Linux community in general by having a large vendor on the community's side. e.g. on the discussion list a member built a 64 bit box and was completely frustrated due to the lack of 64-bit flash support.

There is not a 64 bit version of flash, yet... Nobody has written it.

If Dell receives X amount of calls on the support line they will put a bug in Adobe's ear. Which might encourage corporate open source development or contributions. Or worst case a few more binaries that will eliminate vendor lock in.

Its a light at the end of the tunnel, weather it be the end of the tunnel, or a train coming only the future will tell...

when do the distro flame wars start? :)

I have no interest in that, but here is a related question: If the Dells ship with Ubuntu, and Ubuntu is running great, all devices working, would that imply that other Linux distros would work with the same drivers?

If not, how hard would it be to use bits of another distro to get the desired look and feel of that distro?

I'm thinking the kernels are interchangable between distros if they aren't identical. Also, if the kernels differ at all (due to recompiling for device compatibility or whatever), the source should be available to you.

So how much will this Ubuntu/Dell collaboration help other Linux distros?
