I had not heard of beryl before today. I just tried it out and it
really does look rather fun. I doubt that it really stretches the
limits of GL, but I could only try it out on my system with the nvidia
7600GT, because that is the only computer I have that has Linux on it.

There are other contenders for the "GL-based successor to the *nix GUI", but I picked on Beryl because it's agreed you need at least decent GL performance to make it worthwhile, and if a card would work for this, it would likely work decentrly for other things.

Beryl doesn't seem to be quite ready for FreeBSD yet - my guess is that
in a few short weeks I will simply be able to type "cd
/usr/ports/x11-wm/beryl && make install clean" because I can see that on
developers web pages. I could also install it from scratch, but that
looks like a lot of work, so I am happy to wait.

You lazy geek. :-) Seriously, what you say makes sense. Meanwhile, I am getting some sense of what is really out there, but I have to say that there are *way* too many closely named variants of nVidia cards out there to keep them easily straight. The good news is that decent performing ones are not that expensive. Actually, most stuff isn't that epensive these days. At first blush, it looks like you could build an amazingly good box for $500 or so.
