The main advantage to buying the Linux version is that you don't pay the
microsoft tax. Of course, the first thing I would do is to delete the
existing OS, and reinstall my favorite distribution.
One thing I'm not clear about -- if you install your own distro, will it
work as well as the one that came with the machine? I'm asking because I
often hear about problems with hardware support and drivers, so I'm
thinking that the Dell version of whatever Linux distro would have the
right drivers, and maybe kernel patches. What do the rest of you think
about this issue? Would the right Dell hardware make it so that distros
are readily interchangeable, or would you need bits and pieces from Dell
to make it work optimally?
I agree about laptops -- I'd really like to have a good Linux laptop that
really worked right (standby, hibernation, USB, Firewire, all ports and
devices, etc.).
