Yeah, I found it through scoble who is oftentimes a major hack, but he
does pick up some interesting stuff. And, though a large number of
people in the list aren't religious, I'd expect that at least they can
respect the Catholic church (as can other denominations or religions, I
hope). And, as said, this is more about linux and the tech and the nun
behind the vatican website than anything else ;)
It is an interesting fact that they use Linux. That 25-minute-long
interview looked like it was going to be really boring so I cut out pretty
early on. If she discusses their reasons for choosing Linux, that would
be interesting to know.
If I were them, I definitely would choose Linux and I would encourage (or
require) all diocese to use Linux on their servers. They need their money
for other things. They don't have a shortage of manpower but they always
have a shortage of money given their goals.
You asked for it ... I have mixed feelings about Catholicism. They can do
good things, but they do many bad things, so I give them a mixed review.
The Catholic church was generally supportive of Hitler and the Nazis and
also of Franco and his fascist government. Almost everywhere they go they
manage to work a little evil into their good works. My wife worked for
years with them in Quito, Ecuador, helping poor boys who were being forced
by their families to work at early ages. The priests would not feed a boy
who hadn't made it to church that morning -- every morning, including
weekdays. They would just starve them as punishment. Not so nice.
