I use the Linux command-line, nano text editor, the rpl command-line
tool, and gimp. That lets me do pretty much everything I need to do in a
very efficient way. I host my development server and development
platform both in VMWare. I ssh images to the server as needed and do my
text editing directly on the server through ssh. I've been doing it
pretty much the same for more than a decade and still think it works
better than any fancy editor or coding tools.
I'd be very surprised if using emacs doesn't pay off in the long run. It
may be harder to get started with emacs than with nano, but it emacs has a
lot more to offer. Much of the basic functionality is similar (i.e., nano
uses many emacs keystrokes).
