Been using it for several years now, and I'd have to say, yes, it's the
best in its class.
I highly recommend the book Pragmatic Version Control Using Subversion,
ISBN 0977616657, to get up to speed quickly, and for its tips on best
practices.
I also highly recommend pairing Subversion with Trac
(http://trac.edgewall.org/) for simple issue tracking, wiki-based
project and documentation management, and change tracking. Having all
that integrated in one interface will pay off very quickly (think
integrated search of all that stuff).
