Hrmm, I'd imagine there's probably half a dozen hoax sites... *sigh* I've got too many friends who send me this kinda stuff.  Usually anymore I'm just like, go here before you ask me - google.com and search for it. ;)  Anyways, yeah, I like iTunes - it's a pretty nice program for what it does.  The instant search thing - and it is instant even on a 3 or 4 year old machine I'm using, is NICE.  I also do like that it adds the music to my library location, organizes it, etc.  That's mostly b/c when you've got music files in 20 different locations, it becomes very hard to do backups.  BTW, neat little trick - want to share a library?  Hold the option (or i think alt key) when you open iTunes, and it'll prompt you for a library to open.  Thus, you could keep your iTunes library on an external drive to share between machines.

Nope, never had an issue like that.  I also should mention, that how could it verify such authenticity for a non-drm file?  Particularly since you can change the ID3 tags, etc.  There's NO way to validate such information, realistically.

iTunes is a media manager, that can play AAC, MP3, and a number of other formats.  It's just got automatic control of the iPod built in, so if you've got an iPod, you use iTunes to manage the media list on that iPod.  I use it b/c it's easy to use, syncs automatically with little work, rips CD's easily, and overall is a pretty good media manager.  I just don't use the iTunes store at all - I'll buy a CD and rip it to avoid DRM files.

In other words, use some common sense people.  It's like saying iTunes will automatically format your drive if you don't call apple right now and tell them your social security number, where you were born, etc.  This response to me is the same as an internet hoax spam mail.

I have heard rumors from other people that iTunes wil wipe an MP3 or other music file of the iPod if it cannot verify authenticity of purchase or rip from a CD you own.  Perhaps an iPod owner on this list could verify or negate that rumor.

The iTunes stuff does have some content protection, but it's not too
obtrusive, and their attitude is rather less obnoxious. Plus, you
don't have to get your stuff from iTunes store (or some other pre-set
vendor) to use it on (say) an iPod.

I am confused, you mean I can use Napster's service on an iPod? My impression was that if I wanted to buy online music, I had to buy it though iTunes, or I had to rip it from a purchased CD in MP3 format?
