What you say is true, and MATLAB still soundly defeats Octave on graphics 
-- the MATLAB handle graphics are excellent.  Octave has a bunch of 
features that are superior to those of MATLAB.  One huge thing is that 
Octave comes with Octave Forge which adds massive amounts of functionality 
to Octave.  A lot of Octave Forge will work in MATLAB too, but there isn't 
much of a point in that.  We have MATLAB and Octave installed on our 
supercomputers and I don't bother to use MATLAB anymore.

Yes -- very true.  Apache is another biggie that occurred to me later.
