No, you don't need to go as high in the frequency range, but you do have to go higher than you might think to capture (say) the third formant of some speakers and the find structure of sibilants and such.

Additionally, most of the time the spoken word is delivered fairly
forcefully, so noise floor does not need to be as much of a concern.

It depends on the noise, and what you're using the recording for. If you're doing something like recording auditory evoked responses, you really want the quiet parts to be very quiet. But, yeah, S/N ratios overall are probably much better.

I am not sure, I might have missed what Mike was going to be recording, but
knowing that he is a guitar player I think I naturally assumed he would be
recording guitar.

For sure. I was just trying to make a point about recording other things and expressing my (past) frustration with such things.
