Try "Fink Commander" or switch to NetBSD's pkgsrc or DarwinPorts/ 
MacPorts.  They all have plusses and minuses...

A month isn't nearly long enough to learn the ins-n-outs of a new  
system.  I'm still learning about Mac niceties and shortcuts.
