I use Amarok in Linux and it does okay. I tried a couple other similar
programs and they were pretty unstable. Amarok isn't quite as slick as
iTunes and does have a bit of lock up if you try to feed 1000's of MP3s
into it at once but overall it crashes less and has fewer annoying
quirks than iTunes does. It's still on my bitch list that programmers
start adding features and worrying about how a program looks before they
iron out basic issues like, for this type of program, indexing and
playing music files.
It seems like people care a lot about "skins" and the way the product
looks on the screen. I don't mind a cool look, but I care more about
functionality. Can I see the info I want to see about my files in the
main index? Can I sort them as I please? Is it easy to make playlists?
Does it find all of my files? And of course we don't want bugs.
Of course I'm grumpy about programmers ignoring basic stability before
going hog wild as Thunderbird has managed to lose several years of mail
suddenly this past week as it's storage system obviously has a bug in
recent versions. Old versions would say that a foldr was full and no
more messages could be moved there - newer versions are just wiping out
the folder and starting over. Doh! A 4GB folder limit is ridiculous
anyway as is flat-file storage of messages.
Holy crap -- that is amazing. Talk about a serious bug! I'm glad I'm not
using Thunderbird. On the other hand, it looks like I'm only up to 1.2 GB
in my mail folder. I guess this is because I delete the crap and store
most attachments elsewhere. Still, 4GB is a lot of email!
