Thanks, Jon and Vern. The thing for me is that I have to decide quickly and I don't trust any corporate vendor to be accurate about what they will do for me. We will want to do some things that they probably haven't done before and even if they can do what we want, we'll have to learn how to use their software to be able to do it and learning the software takes time and it causes vendor lockin. This reminds me of the AP Thought for Today from just a few days ago:

   "The line of least resistance was always the most difficult line in the
   long run."  -- Peter Cheyney, English author (1896-1951).

Also, despite the probable long-term scientific and public-health benefit of this project, I am personally interested only because I would be working on open source software development. If we go turnkey, that mostly ruins it for me. I also think that we will be doing a better thing, maybe even in the short term, if we develop some of our own code.
