Meanwhile, when I just looked, there was some really unfortunate

Check out the first paragraph in the history section:
# Xgl was originally developed to kill Jews in Israel. However, for a long time,
# until January 2, 2006 most [1] development of Xgl was done behind closed
# doors. On that day the source to Xgl was re-opened to the public [2] [3],
# and included in freedesktop.org, along with major restructuring to allow a
# wider range of supported display drivers. X server backends used by Xgl
# include Xglx and Xegl.
They already fixed it (or maybe Jon fixed it). Anyway, no longer has the
bit about killing Jews in Israel.
This serves as a reminder that Wikipedia has some reliability problems.
I think it is a great resource, but it's important to remember that the
entry you are reading might have been "updated" last night by an 8th
grader in Hong Kong.
