Hi
How can i tell what kind of fan i have? i can't find my little screw
driver so ic an't get in there right now. I guess i really am having
overheating issues, for it is shutting off way more often, which is
making trying to fix the hard drive/OS/MBR and whatever other problems
i'm really having a LOT harder cause i can' tfigure out some things
while it is shutting down in the middle of repair. Would I be having
issues with a bad powersupply in addition to the overheating issues?? I
can't seem to shed much light on the issue and the HP people are
useless!!

Any input would be good! PLEASE!

The fan mount and heatsink are all one large assembly and you usually have to remove it all off of the motherboard and CPU to get at the fan. You either replace the entire HSF module if the fan is not removable. In some cases, the fan is removable from the assembly and then you order a new fan to put in there and all is well. You will have to clean off all of the thermal compound and apply new if you take the heatsink off of the CPU. Use a GOOD compound like Arctic Silver 5 as the cheap stuff just sucks. I know as I have used it :(

The heatpipe assembly looks much like a passive chipset heatpipe cooling assembly on a desktop motherboard, such as ABIT's Q-OTES system or ASUS's knockoff of it. There is a small fan blowing over the heatsink's fins and the fan comes out nicely and easily. If this is what's in your laptop, just replace the fan.

If you are unsure of what kind you have, post a picture of the inside of your laptop and I'll be more than happy to help you ID it and give you repair options. I'd even help you do it unless you're located more than a reasonable distance out of Columbia.
