Well, I recompiled system with 
just -O2 -pipe -mmmx -msse -msse2 -march=pentium4. Then I did just as you 
said (the 3 dependencies it pulled in were all upgradeable after today's 
sync- hmmm...) Now it works! I wonder what exactly fixed it? I did the 
unmerge and remerge of OpenOffice before, so I am guessing something in 
system didn't like -mfpmath=sse and -ffast-math with GCC 4.1.1.
