I did compile OpenOffice once on that machine. It took 12 hours. Trying to use
distcc to have my desktop help does not work- it dies 2 hours into the
compile. When it was bumped to the next version (2.0.2) I just downloaded the
binary, which took 3 minutes.

I'll try that. The default flags are -02 -pipe and set -$PROCARCH. I have my
desktop using AMD's suggested "for best performance with 64-bit Linux/GCC"
flags
of -march=k8 -msse3 -ffast-math -O3 -pipe -funroll-all-loops -funit-at-a-time
-fpeel-loops -ftracer -funswitch-loops -mfpmath=sse -fomit-frame-pointer.

That's what I was running. However, even in the old 2006.0 profile, GCC 4.1.1
was marked stable and you have to undertake great pains to not be made to use
it sooner or later. So I did my desktop first on AMD64 and the upgrade went
perfectly. So I did the laptop and I have this problem. Well, I could revert,
but that entails a lot of work and the problem will show its head later.

That's what I did. I emerged openoffice-bin which is the tarball binary
installer from OpenOffice.org.

I'll see if it is masked in Portage testing. I'll get back to you tomorrow,
and thanks for your input.
