I've experienced this with my crappy Netgear. It is a limitation in
the NAT programming that keeps track of TCP/IP connections.  It
forgets the connection if it doesn't see a packet go by now and then.

I remember having to patch and recompile SSH to get the keep alive
packets working, but it looks like it may be included by default now.
