Russell, brings up a good point.  Mediacom is in the process of
upgrading their network to 256QAM, and a lot of their older modems (3-4
years), especially the blue Com21s, are having difficulties with the new
equipment.  If you have an older one, I suggest dropping by their local
office and swap it for either the Motorola or the RCA modems.

Are you sure your router is dropping the packets?

What sort of packet loss do you see in ping? Do you see the same packet
loss for every host? How about if you connect directly to the cable
modem - is the packet loss the same? Do you see packet loss from
multiple computers on your network?

Have you checked to see if you have something like:

  ServerAliveInterval 60

In your /etc/ssh/ssh_config file? And something like this in sshd_config
if your ssh'ing in the way?

  KeepAlive yes
  ClientAliveInterval 60
