Any router that can accept an IP from the WAN via DHCP should be compatible
with the Mediacom service as it's just straight Ethernet from the modem. I
use a Linksys WRT54GC and it seems to work just fine for me, but I don't do
ssh to my box from the outside. Anyway, Mediacom has dynamic, non-sticky IPs
for its residential customers so it's a PITA to try to have anything
available from my computer to the Internet (that's probably by design as a
fixed IP from them is a LOT more money.)
As far as the router not going back to the default login, I would suppose that
it might be a firmware problem. But if you cannot log in, you cannot flash
it. And a new one? I say D-Link isn't so hot- maybe you could go with a
small "real" enterprise-grade router by Cisco et. al or set up a cheap, old
PC with Linux or BSD and a load of NICs in it to act as your router.
