Is it for a laptop or a desktop? If it's for a desktop, I recommend a wireless
bridge for the wireless connectivity. You plug an Ethernet cable from your
computer into the bridge and configure the wireless from a Web-based
interface. I have a Buffalo WLI-TX4-HP model and it works fine. No drivers on
the host machine for the wireless == no pain for the user. If it's for a
laptop's PCMCIA slot, ones based on Ralink or Intel chipsets work well.
Atheros ones are okay too (use the mad-wifi drivers.) Probably your safest
bet would be an Intel-based WLAN adapter for mini-PCI though. The 2100, 2200
and 29xx models all are known to work well under Linux. The 34xx series is a
PCI-express model and probably will only come integrated in a newer laptop.
Their support is coming as Intel has been known to be at least decent with
the Linux drivers.

As far as a modem, get a serial modem if you can as they are pretty much
guaranteed to work with Linux as they're not winmodems. However, my laptop's
integrated Intel 537 winmodem works fine with the smartlink softmodem
software. USB modems may or may not work well with Linux- if it's an
honest-to-God hardware unit, it will, if it's the common and crappy
winmodems, it's a crapshoot.
