Well, I just learned that not all places are covered by the same site
licenses. For example, the ag engineering building is not under the site
license for AutoCAD that EBE and EBW have, so they pay $15k to keep it on 3
computers over in Ag. Engr.

You should also realize that not all site licenses are created equal.
One company's version of a site license might be the entire
organization, another company might consider a site license a single
building.

Microsoft licensing is a mess, it is very likely that even the most
diligent IT department could find themselves in violation of license
if they are ever audited simply because understanding the licenses
options is so difficult.

I'd say. I was barely even aware of Linux five years ago. I think I had read
an article about Red Hat somewhere- that's about it. Probably had something
to do with being on dialup with 5 other people wanting to use the one
computer we had. Now I use it daily and would never think of using a non-OSS
UNIX-based OS.

Just be happy that Microsoft is in the business of selling software, with their ability and money, they could give the software away at this point and still make money. If the OSS crowd really does what they are hoping to do, you could very well see a day that Windows becomes license free. It is a long way from happening, but never underestimate the power of the giant when threatened.
