A desktop management software would mainly be used to inventory hardware and software an each machine. but the problem is that most only do Windows. Another part of the desktop management software would be to handle application and patch installations to each managed pc. It would then publish the data from all managed desktops to a central database for report generation. Hope this helps clarify the situation. Thanks,
Diana

Was looking into the possibility of open source desktop management
softwares and found several for hardware and software inventory and
whatnot, and found several more for managing software installs and
patching, and a few for a whole DM solution. Alas, this being state
government, it comes down to this:
Anyone here use any of the big 3 (Altiris, LanDesk, SMS)? Any insights
to be given? I found a white paper somewhere that the university uses
SMS. good? bad? indifferent?
Thanks,
Diana

May I ask, what is desktop management software used for?

Regards,
Mark
