Use the ncurses-mode "traditional Debian" installer disc instead of the new
LiveCD-based installer. It worked to put Xubuntu on my laptop. I have /
and /home formatted as XFS, which meant that I had to make a /boot in ext2
format for GRUB to work. The ncurses-based partitioner worked like a charm.
I tend to shy away from GUI installers unless they have a PROVEN track record
of working (such as SuSE's YaST setup tool.) Text-mode installers tend not to
goof up so much.
