Well, it also lets Microsoft play into the users' hands and "let them continue
to use their old, familiar office program in the face of the Anti-Competitive
[sic] Open-Source Hippies stupid laws." You and I know exactly what they want
to do, but most people don't know and wouldn't really care even if they did
know.
You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, and the playing-to-the-laziness
is the honey. The DMCA et. al is the vinegar, and they have yet to invoke
that against Sun and the OpenOffice.org team, but I bet they might if they
see their new "open XML" formats reverse-engineered.
