So I kept track of this - and periodically look around for it. Check this out

There was an article in NY Times two days before Christmas:

The author noted the high cost of these things, but he seemed to think
that the Avtech VDPF2 was a good, under-$200 model, and the Wallflower, a
"hand-built majesty" that runs Linux, was a good high-end option (about
$700 - $900):

My prediction for the future:  You'll give your parents a nice frame and
you'll control it from your home - adding photos, sounds, etc., to display
films/photos/etc of your kids as they grow.  It will run Linux and you'll
control it by SSH or VNC or somesuch.  Your parents will love it.

Since we're almost there now, it isn't much of a stretch to make this
prediction.  I assume the price of nice displays will continue to decline.
