Your friend's address wasn't a gmail one? I wonder if they have mail
forwarding set up to a gmail account?
Your message would then go like this:
Web browser -> google smtp server
google -> your friend's smtp server
your friend's server -> google smtp server
At stage three it looks like a message came from EMAIL:PROTECTED but
originated at the IP of your friend's server. Of course it isn't an
authorised SMTP server for gmail emails so the message got rejected.
If that's the case, your friend would need to impliment Sender Rewriting
Scheme forwarding to solve the problem.
