Personally, I think they'd be better off playing catchup with something
else for the last mile that could be a little more ubiquitous than
fiber, like broadband over power or utilizing the broadcast TV spectrum
(8MHz I think?). Fiber takes a long time to roll out, especially when
you're talking about trying to get enough market penetration to make it
profitable within the next few decades.
