I was reading in The Maneater about plans for IATS to roll out a new e-mail system to students. They are partnering with Microsoft to have MS's Windows EMAIL:PROTECTED mail service replace the current University-run one. The upsides are that you get 2GB of mail space and can keep your @mizzou.edu address after you graduate. But the downsides are what made me a little upset (and as I am going to medical school here, I'll be affected.)

First, there will be ads in the interface and possibly in tagline on your messages once you graduate. Okay, that's not that bas and what Yahoo! et. al do. I can live with that.

Secondly, Microsoft has said that they "unabashedly will use this to try to hook new users for life." That's pretty sleazy, but again, it's not that bad (and at least they are being honest for once.)

Third, the interface will be set up somewhat like the current Exchange webmail is- you have to be using MSIE on Windows if you want the fully-featured version. Everybody else gets the stripped-down version. I almost never use Webmail as I use KMail as an e-mail client, but when I do use it, it is barely adequate to send a short meassage to somebody. I don't know how people use it all the time as even the fully-featured version can't hold a candle to any real POP/IMAP client.

But the really bad thing is that there will no longer be POP/IMAP/SMTP access to any students. Coupled with the fact that the stripped-down interface, it really sucks! I sent an e-mail to IATS that's pretty similar to this letter- well, it's a bit nicer, but I think that it will fall on deaf ears. I wonder what you guys think about this and if this can be stopped.

Phillip
