Contrary to what many lifetime city dwellers believe, quite a few people like
to live out in the rural areas. There is a lot more space and a lot fewer
people, which leads to less crime, traffic, noise, neighbor issues, and the
housing market is a lot more reasonably-priced. Rural residents are not
necessarily "hicks," "rednecks," or otherwise unenlightened- not any more
than the city bums, panhandlers, and people who drive with one hand on the
horn button and the other out the window flipping the bird, all while cutting
across six lanes of traffic, running a red light, and talking on a cell
phone. The rural areas are not third-world by any comparison. In fact, one
common characteristic of almost all third-world countries is a high
population density...
There are a few trade-offs for living out there, and one of them is that the
Internet is dial-up or expensive and relatively slow and
data-transfer-limited satellite. However, there is IEEE 802.15 "WiMax" on the
horizon and that is supposed to be good for 30 miles or so.
