Imagine a notebook that only draws 50 watts when active, calculate how
much solar panel surface area you would need to generate this, total
up the costs and all the design changes this will require, and you've
probably got an answer as to why this is not an easy problem.   That
said, the hand crank notebook is an amazingly cool idea.

Then I guess I misread your comment on there not being a port for one,
since the USB port would seem to be a legitimate port for a USB modem.

I never said nobody needed a modem, but I haven't turned out to need
one, and, for better or for worse, I'm obviously the target market
here. :-)

Please do not attribute attitudes or beliefs to me that I do not hold.
Thank you.  I just mentioned that many people these days don't really
need a modem badly enough to include one by default, especially since
it takes up space.
