And this is exactly the kind of thing that Apple just goes out and
does before anybody else much understands the problem.  I've seen many
notebooks clatter to the floor when somebody trips on the cord, and it
ain't pretty.  The old Apple Power connectors took the slightly
friendlier approach of sometimes committing suicide in that situation,
which got really old at ~$70 a pop.

You do know that they make and support a USB dongle modem, right?

Not elegant, but the last time I actually wanted to use a modem
was...let's see...I think late 2001.  The modem is rapidly becoming
the floppy disk of the early 21st century.
