Do you mean megahertz? 40.000 KHz is more likely to be a ceramic resonator.
I don't know of any local electronics store in Columbia. It's not
"that kind of town". When I was in Rolla, there was a pretty good
electronics distributor. There was also a "hobby club" in the EE
building. And down the hall was another electronics lab, where the
tech was a friendly guy and would give you whatever you were looking
for. (Also, he smoked a pipe. I was back in Rolla over St. Pat's and
the EE building still smells the same.)
Don't look for anything like that in Columbia. As near as I can tell,
Mizzou's EE department exists to provide vocational Java training to
overseas workers and bring in that sweet out-of-state money.
I have some cabinets of parts that I got from an engineer who was
getting out of the hardware business. So if anybody needs some
oddball resistor value, or TTL/CMOS logic chips, I've probably got it
in my garage. I've only got 12 and 20 MHz crystals though, but I've
got hundreds of 'em.
